As the site i believe is run on its own server by 007 it would slow speeds down for the site reaction time causing load times to be longer on the forum if people are using internal links i would believe kinda for the same reason the shoutbox is separate basically

hosting material like that on our own servers puts us at much greater liability than 3rd party hosting sites. also, as GreenL pointed out, there is strain on the server when downloads are in progress. because of the high expense of hosted servers these days, I am doing everything I can to use other servers resources on our site, such as CDN, externally hosted files, strong caching, shoutbox on another server, etc.

there are actually two servers in use on this site. the main server, the one running the entire site, except the shoutbox is hosted through hostgator. the FTP/Radio/NM Video/Shoutbox are all run from a server in my basement.

I would like to host the entire site on a server in my basement, but there are 2 major roadblocks.

          1. I would need a beefier server than what is currently in there, and the one I have is no upgradeable to where it would need to be

          2. it is against the TOS of my ISP (verizon FIOS) to host a web site, unless I have a business line, which is about $180 dollars more a month.

I guess if we had too, we could use my basement server as a fallback for hosting downloads, if all the 3rd party sites go down. that might still put me at a greater risk though.

Yea its the same way with my isp they won't allow no website hosting without a business line which is shitty and also hosting sites nowadays on dedicated servers are pricey i believe i worked for tons of shared hosting websites and must say shared is not the way to go cause a whole wack of sites can go down that is on that ip range.I sure hated them days when 10,000 sites or sometimes more would go offline and the call que would go crazy for hours with people bitching lol

yea we used to be on shared hosting like that. now we are on a virtual server. there are still probably multiple virtual servers on the one host, but probably alot less than on the shared servers.

and yea virtual is not as pricey as dedicated but we're still paying 110 per month for our VPS, which is only mid level

Yes paying 110$ monthly is still enough for a VPS but certainly seems more stable then your standard shared hosting from what i can see that's for sure this site works great.

we were actually forced off of shared hosting by hostgator. the shoutbox kept tanking resources on their shared servers, forcing them to shut us down until i fixed it. i wish i had thought of the shoutbox stream before taking us to VPS. woulda saved me tons of money

Yep i hear ya there our system administrators would send us support tickets saying these people are using way to much bandwidth and we would have to contact them that's where the dedicated servers come in real handy cause its your own box basically so you can do whatever ya please but like we say at a very costly price worth it in some ways and others it's not.

yea, the price sucks, but there are alot of things that make it worth it. i have full root access, so I have been able to add all kinds of goodies too our server like xCache, and I can add any modules to apache i want like mod_pagespeed.

That's right forgot about the root access can remember countless times people phoning in and requesting root access and we were like umm sorry not possible on a shared server well it was but we couldn't give them direct access to basically everything so the answer was always nope. But if customers were nice we could get certain apache modules installed as we all had certain sys admins that we could go to online and say hook it up although the one you mentioned they were sometimes not to keen on doing. It was hard for us to do tech with our admins though as we were based out of canada doing tech for like probably an easy 300 different shared hosting companies and the admins were from the ukraine and we only communicated with them threw a ticketing system known as pigs lol and there was sometimes major language barriers which made it hard but when it came to the companies basically who ever it said on the phone we were that company. Our founder of the company was also the founder of Tucows if you are familiar with them i did alot of registrar work there also it was fun working there its to bad a bitch manager had to ruin it for me i am glad to say though that i was apart of the worlds biggest website internet migration in history but boy it was a headache at times we also had unix based servers alright im rambling but that's a brief history on my hosting experiences haha!
