Friday Update - 14-Dec-2012 Update

Hey everyone, welcome to another Friday. Less than 2 weeks until Christmas now!

To start things off for today's update, the nominees for the 2012 Winter Awards have been chosen, and the voting has begun. Make sure to get your vote in before the polls end on the 24th. We will announce the winners on Christmas day, followed by starting the vote for 2012's Member of the Year Award.


Next, a lot of you asked for more integration between the site and the shoutbox. After the Final Shoutbox Update back in May, I assumed it wasn't possible due to the shoutbox being hosted on another site. As those of you who know me know, "not possible" wasn't good enough so I spent some time learning more about MySQL to make it happen.

The shoutbox is now more fully integrated with the site. No longer does it require an additional login. The @ mentions & thanks mods are also integrated and will notify you there of new mentions/quotes/tags/thanks/likes/dislikes. You will also be notified of new PM's in the shoutbox. Lastly, thread and post milestones will be announced in the shoutbox. You can always turn off those notifications through the shoutbox options.

All of this happens without the resource drain of having the shoutbox loaded on the same server as the main site.

Real good message bro. We should all be thinking and praying for these kids and their families. I can honestly say this is the worst act by a single human being that I can recall in my life time.

I don't know how it is in other countries, but in the states, this has rocked the whole nation. 20 Kindergartners gone just like that. Words cant describe...

Because it is fully integrated now. Without going into too much confusing technical detail, think of it how multiple apple devices sync over icloud. The same kind of thing is happening between the site and the shoutbox server. Basically the posts, threads, members, PMs etc from the main site database are all synced to the database on the SB site. The SB itself on the SB site syncs back to the main site.

The benefit of doing this is the main site gets the full features of the SB without the huge resource drain from having the main site and SB on the same server.

You could log out of the shoutbox site, but because of the sync, you would be logged back in. You can always minimize it by clicking the arrow button on the top right.
