  • At The Movies: 'Saw 3D' Tops Weekend Box Office With Final Installment

With it being a Halloween weekend, it only made since that a horror flick be the top box office movie ... and this weekend, it was "Saw 3D".

The Lionsgate flick, billed as the final installment in the "Saw" series, debuted at #1 with $22.5 million, $10 million more than the debut of last year's "Saw VI," the first miss in the annual horror franchise. about Jigsaw's legacy of bloody terror.

"Last year, a lot of people said, 'OK, that's it. Put a fork in it, it's done,'" David Spitz, head of distribution for Lionsgate, told the Associated Press. "The following week, we were all disappointed and thought, what can we do to reinvigorate the franchise? So we shot the movie in 3-D and said this is the final chapter."

Well, it worked somewhat. The previous installments of the film all topped $30 million over opening weekend. So $24.2 isn't a bad start. But with this being their seventh movie, what can you expect. It wasn't a bad run!

Last weekend's #1, Paramount's "Paranormal Activity 2," fell to #2 this week with $16.5 million, raising its total to $65.7 million.

The action comedy "Red" held steady at #3 with $10.8 million, lifting its total to $58.9 million; while "Jackass 3D" crossed the $100 million mark, coming in at #4 this weekend with $8.4 million.

And closing out the top 5 is "Hereafter", the drama starring Matt Damon. It earned $6.3 million.

And in narrower release, Fox Searchlight's legal drama "Conviction" broke into the top-10 after two weeks in a handful of theaters. Starring Hilary Swank in the real-life story of a woman who put herself through law school to free her brother on a murder rap, "Conviction" was #10 with $1.8 million, playing in 565 theaters.

That's a wrap this week. Next weekend, look out for the release of the Robert Downey, Jr. and Zach Galifianakis comedy "Due Date", the Tyler Perry drama "For Colored Girls", and the animated "Megamind" with Will Ferrell.

This weekend's top 10 is as follows:

    1 - "Saw 3D," $24.2 million.
    2 - "Paranormal Activity 2," $16.5 million.
    3 - "Red," $10.8 million.
    4 - "Jackass 3D," $8.4 million.
    5 - "Hereafter," $6.3 million.
