First announced nearly two years ago, Paul Reubens is teaming with Judd Apatow for a new feature film based on his Pee-wee Herman character. Today, ComingSoon.net had the opportunity to speak with Reubens at a press junket for the upcoming "TRON: Uprising" television series (in which Reubens provides the voice of a character named Pavel) and he offered an update about the still-untitled film.
"That's any minute, supposedly," he said. "...It's going great. We have a meeting this coming week. We just did a very quick little rewrite on it. As far as I know it's getting shot very soon."
In addition to starring as Herman, Reubens is providing the screenplay alongside fellow actor/writer Paul Rust while Apatow will produce.
"I actually wasn't supposed to talk about it initially," Reubens explained of the long delay since word of the project broke. "I was talking about it in this very veiled, secret way going, 'Oh, I wish I could talk about it.' ...It got leaked about six months to a year before it was supposed to."
The film will mark Pee-wee's third big screen adventure after 1985's Pee-wee's Big Adventure (the theatrical debut of director Tim Burton) and its 1988 sequel, Big Top Pee-wee.
"Right after [the new film] I'm following it up with two incredible [projects]," Reubens continued, later hinting that one of them has a tie to reality television. "I would give anything to be able to brag to you right now and drop some names."
Check back for more updates on the Pee-wee Herman feature as they become available and for full interviews with the cast and crew of "TRON: Uprising" closer to its June 7th premiere.
