  • Spaceballs Gets a 25th Anniversary Blu-ray By the power of Schwartz!

May the Schwartz be with you! On August 7, 2012, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will once again bring Mel Brooks' classic Star Wars parody, Spaceballs, to Blu-ray, this time to celebrate the film's 25th Anniversary.

For those living under a rock, here's a synopsis of the feature direct from Fox, "When the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) attempts to steal all the air from planet Druidia, a determined Druish Princess (Daphne Zuniga), a clueless rogue (Bill Pullman) and a half-man/half-dog creature who's his own best friend (Candy) set out to stop him. But with the forces of darkness closing in on them at ludicrous speed, they'll need the help of a wise imp named Yogurt (Mel Brooks) and the mystical power of "The Schwartz" to bring peace and merchandising rights to the entire galaxy!"

Fox has not provided artwork at this time. However, specs for the disc will include a 1080p high definition transfer, preserving the film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Audio will be mixed in English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, with optional English and Spanish subtitles. Bonus features will include the following:

NEW!! Farce Yourself! Spaceballs and the Skroobing of Sci-Fi Featurette
    Commentary by Mel Brooks
Additional Commentary Tracks: Mawgese and Dinkese
    Spaceballs: The Documentary Featurette
In Conversation: Mel Brooks & Thomas Meehan Featurette
    John Candy: Comic Spirit Featurette
Watch the Movie in Ludicrous Speed Featurette
    The Behind-the-Movie Photos
    Spaceballs: The Costume Gallery
    Spaceballs: The Art Gallery
Trailers: Exhibitor Trailer with Mel Brooks Introduction and Theatrical Trailer
    Storyboards-to-Film Comparison
Film Flubs: Edge of the Mirror, Grabs Himself Early, The Magic Reappearing Ring, More Than His Head, No End in Sight and Track Behind Dot

Unfortunately, this release misses yet another opportunity to spoof the constant tweaks and tinkering that George Lucas has done to the Star Wars films. From the looks of it, no superfluously added CG or irritating "Noooos!" have been added to create some sort of lampooned alternate version. Maybe when the film turns 30?
