A slight release date push has been made for Universal's R.I.P.D. - the action/horror/comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges.
The film, an adaptation of the Dark Horse comic book of the same name, was originally slated for a June 28, 2013 release but it will now open July 19, 2013.
That's a free weekend right at the time of this writing, but it should be noted that this positions R.I.P.D.'s opening one week after Warner Bros./Legendary debuts Pacific Rim on July 12th.
If that Guillermo Del Toro-directed monsters vs. robots epic lives up to the overwhelming reaction its preview received at Comic-Con this summer, it could very well crush any competition opening in its wake, including R.I.P.D.
In its original June 28th slot, the Reynolds/Bridges-starring film, however, was opening against Kick-Ass 2 and White House Down. Sticking with that June spot might have been a wiser choice, but perhaps the film needed a bit more time?
R.I.P.D. focuses on the "Rest In Peace Department" where a murdered cop comes back from the dead to find his killer.
Universal is no doubt probably doing some fine-tuning to their release slate for 2013 after the fickle summer it faced (Battleship was considered a bomb for them, however, Ted was a huge hit).
