Normally I’d scoff at such news, but the last time I did that Darren Lynn Bousman ended up directing Mother’s Day.
Website It’s on the Grid lists John Travolta as “attached” to Toxic Avenger, the Steve Pink-directed remake of the Troma classic about a mutated superhero. It’s described as in the vein of The Mask, but “not” campy.
Pink is directing for Troma from a screenplay he wrote with Daniel C. Mitchell. Charlie Corwin, Akiva Goldsman, Richard Saperstein, Lloyd Kaufman, and Michael Herz all produce.
Here’s the original 1986 plot: “This is the story of Melvin, the Tromaville Health Club mop boy, who inadvertently and naively trusts the hedonistic, contemptuous and vain health club members, to the point of accidentally ending up in a vat of toxic waste. The devastating results then have a transmogrification effect, his alter ego is released, and the Toxic Avenger is born, to deadly and comical results. The local mop boy is now the local Superhero, the saviour of corruption, thuggish bullies and indifference. Troma classic with good make-up effects and stunts, a pleasant surprise indeed.“
