  • Michael Bay On Why He Decided To Make Transformers 4

While Michael Bay was filming Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon, he said it would be his last Transformers movie. Shortly after the movie was released he was signed on to direct a fourth one, so why did he change his mind and what is he planning for it? In a recent interview with The Huffington Post he explains,

I thought I was done. Then the ride came out and the two-and-a-half-hour lines. And then you're thinking, 'Oh my God, someone's going to take this over?' And you start doing a lot of soul-searching… I'm thinking that if I do this last one, we set it on a new footing and we change a lot of things, but we keep the history of the three in place. But we broaden it so it can be set up and be carried on -- it would have a better chance for survival, I guess… The bottom line is, when you go to Universal Studios and you have the two-and-a-half-hour line, it's hard to give it up. You birth a baby and you want to carry it on.

So it was just one of those things. It's like, when you look what's going on in the film business with the franchise frenzy right now, why is Cameron doing two more "Avatar" movies? Why is Peter Jackson doing three more "Hobbit" movies that are in the same world as "Lord of the Rings"? When you have a franchise, it's very hard to give it up.

Bay goes on to say that the fourth film will "probably" be his last. So it seems like he might not want to completely give up the franchise to someone else anytime soon. I guess we'll see once he's finished with part four. He then gives a little teasing info about the direction of the script that Ehren Kruger is writing,

We're basically taking from the history of where it was, or where we left it in Chicago, and we're going to carry it on from there.

We previously heard that the movie would feature a whole new cast of humans and robots. Paramount Pictures has already set the release date of the movie for June 27th, 2014.

Are you happy to see Bay directing a fourth film? Would you like to see him keep directing them, or would you like to see the franchise in the hands of another director? I actually think it might be cool to see someone else's vision.
