  • ‘Man of Steel’ Officially Confirmed for IMAX and 3D Release

It’s a bird… It’s a plane… It’s Superman, flying right at your face on a gigantic screen! Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have just announced that next summer’s Man of Steel will open in 3D and IMAX as well as, of course, plain old 2D. And if all this sounds familiar, it’s probably because we already reported the same thing back in July — only for IMAX to backtrack soon after. This time, though, the news is sticking. More after the jump.

The companies issued a release today revealing the decision to offer Man of Steel in 3D and IMAX. Movie lovers may want to proceed with caution when they shell out for tickets, however. Director Zack Snyder did not originally shoot the film in 3D or IMAX, meaning the movie is being converted for both formats. That doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t look good, but you won’t get nearly the bang for your buck that you would with a picture that was actually shot in native 3D and/or IMAX.

For what it’s worth, Snyder claims in the statement that he filmed Man of Steel with the possibility of a 3D conversion in mind. “Anticipating how audiences today embrace 3D, we designed and photographed the movie in a way that would allow Man of Steel to captivate those movie goers, while respecting fans who prefer a more traditional cinematic experience,” he wrote. “We’ve taken great measures to ensure the film and the story come first, and 3D is meant as an enhancement.”

Do you buy his explanation? Will you see Man of Steel in IMAX 3D when it opens June 14?

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported years ago to Earth from Krypton, a highly advanced, distant planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question ‘Why am I here?’ Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark discovers having extraordinary abilities means making difficult decisions. When the world is in dire need of stability, an even greater threat emerges. Clark must become a Man of Steel, to protect the people he loves and shine as the world’s beacon of hope – Superman.
