For many years, Eddie Murphy could not lose. He had a successful run at stand-up, which would launch a movie career that boasts a string of box office hits from the 1980s... well into the late 2000's. But, as of late, his movies have been flops -- including Imagine That, A Thousand Words and Meet Dave. This helps him top Forbes' new list of Hollywood's Most Overpaid Actors.
Movies have to earn twice as much as production budget in ticket sales to turn a profit. His last three aforementioned films earned $153 million on an estimated budget of $75 million. So, yea, it's not good. Murphy returned an average of $2.30 at the box office for every dollar he was paid.
Coming in at #2 is a newcomer to the list: Katherine Heigl. For every dollar she was paid on her last three movies, they earned an average of $3.40.
The actress scored hits with Knocked-Up, 27 Dresses and The Ugly Truth, helping her movie rate shoot up to the $12 million range. Unfortunately, the films she's made at that price point have failed to deliver. Her most recent film, One For The Money, earned only $37 million on an estimated $40 million budget.
Reese Witherspoon ranks third with an average $3.90 return for every $1 she was paid; Sandra Bullock comes in fourth with a $5 return for every $1 she was paid; and Jack Black rounds out the top 5 returning only $5.20 for every $1 he was paid.
The list also includes Nicolas Cage, Adam Sandler, Denzel Washington, Ben Stiller, and Sarah Jessica Parker.
