  • Weekend Box Office: 'Zero Dark Thirty' Takes #1 At Box Office

The Osama bin Laden raid drama, Zero Dark Thirty, took the box office in its first weekend in wide release, beating out the Wayans family comedy A Haunted House and the crime drama Gangster Squad.

Sony Pictures' controversial Zero Dark Thirty earned $24 million. It's a chronicle of the decade-long hunt for the al-Qaeda terrorist leader, after the September 2001 attacks, and his death at the hands of the Navy S.E.A.L. Team 6 in May 2011.

The film, which opened in a limited run last month, earned five Oscar nominations last week, including best picture, original screenplay and actress for Jessica Chastain as a dogged CIA operative.

The Wayans horror parody, A Haunted House placed second with a solid $18.8 million, while Warner Bros' mobster drama Gangster Squad landed at #3 with $16.7 million. Squad stars Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling as off-the-books police officers battling a mob boss played by Sean Penn.

Quentin Tarantino's slave tale, Django Unchained, falls to #4 with $11 million; and Les Miserables closes out the top 5 with $10.1 million.

That's a wrap for this weekend. This upcoming week, look out for the release of the Arnold Schwarzenegger action flick The Last Stand, Mark Wahlberg's crime thriller Broken City, and the Universal horror film Mama.
