  • The Last Stand Flop

He promised he’d be back, but apparently that assurance didn’t resonate with moviegoers.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s latest movie, ‘The Last Stand,’ fell flat at the box office during its opening weekend, coming in at a lowly ninth place in total
    Friday grosses.

The movie stars the former California governor as a sheriff in a sleepy Arizona town in his first leading film role in nearly a decade.

Flop: Lionsgate's 'The Last Stand,' starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, failed to perform well for its opening weekend

Terminator: Schwarzenegger attends the LA premiere of 'The Last Stand' earlier this week

‘The Last Stand’ earned a paltry $1.9million on Friday, according to estimates by Deadline. And with an estimated budget of around $30million, that doesn’t bode well.

Studio executives no doubt expected a better box office performance from the Hollywood heavyweight, 65, who had his first leading role since 2003’s ‘Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.’

The movie also stars Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker and Johnny Knoxville, of MTV’s ‘Jackass’ fame.

Many critics said that Schwarzenegger’s performance of Sheriff Ray Owens falls flat in the film.

The former bodybuilder-turned-actor-turned-politician, now well into middle age, can no longer do the stunts and tricks hallmark to his role as the Terminator.

Variety said that the Governator looks ‘at once blankly inexpressive and doggedly determined’ making a ‘creaky but reasonably commercial comeback bid.’ The showbiz publication branded the movie itself as 'predictable,' with 'cartoonish' action.

The Hollywood Reporter slammed the ‘conspicuously tasteless’ use of a school bus in one of the movie’s violent scenes, but draws comparison of Schwarzenegger’s role as that of Clint Eastwood in the early 1990s - an aging man who is still physically capable when need be.

And the future doesn't look promising for the film, either. Entertainment Weekly predicts that the film would be lucky to earn $7.5million by the end of the holiday weekend.

Horror film ‘Mama,’ produced by Guillermo Del Toro, won at the box office this weekend, earning an impressive $10million on Friday alone.

In second was Kathryn Bigelow’s controversial drama ‘Zero Dark Thirty,’ grossing $4.6million on Friday.

Coming in third with $3million was ‘Silver Linings Playbook,’ a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Robert De Niro.

I believe T5 will make a huge amount of money if they do it now. Now it's the time.

the problem is nowadays people are spoiled with CGI movies that they cant appreciate old school action movies

I guess this is a kind of movie where you can switch-off your brain after coming back from work and enjoy the night

dont know if I go to the cinema or buy the blu-ray
