Queen Latifah’s production company, Flavor Unit Entertainment, has struck a multi-year deal with video-streaming service Netflix.
Queen Latifah, whose real name is Dana Owens, announced the deal earlier today with her production partner Shakim Compere in a press release.
“Shakim and I are thrilled to do business with Netflix,” she said in a statement. “Netflix is a strong brand and the perfect place to showcase our projects.”
The deal, which begins this Spring, will give Netflix first look at titles from Flavor Unit Entertainment. The Miami-based production company has produced such films as 2003′s Bringing Down the House, 2005′s Beauty Shop, 2010′s Just Wright, and most recently the Lifetime original movie, Steel Magnolias.
“We are delighted to work with Queen Latifah to be the exclusive destination for what are sure to be relevant, entertaining movies,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer of Netflix. “Queen Latifah has a long track record of creating hits and Flavor Unit Entertainment is a fresh and exciting voice in the industry.”
Flavor Unit’s upcoming slate includes the thriller House of Bodies starring Terrence Howard and Percentage which stars Ving Rhames, Macy Gray and Cam’ron.
This fall Flavor Unit Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television will also be teaming up to produce and broadcast the new incarnation of “The Queen Latifah Show,” which has been off the air since August of 2001.
