I file Todd McFarlane’s Spawn remake in the same category as Clive Barker’s Tortured Souls: the “somebody needs to break the news to the creator that it’ll never happen” category.
Having recently re-watched Mark A.Z. Dippé’s 1997 adaptation of McFarlane’s Image Comics creation, I’m the first to raise my hand demanding a redo (that movie, starring Michael Jai White and John Leguizamo, is a heaping pile of crap), I just think McFarlane is all talk and no do. I’m sick of waiting for this goddamn redo, just like I waited in agony for him to release “Spawn” #4 back in 2001. He talks about it constantly, and yet, I’ve never heard of any real progress. I’ll believe it when I see it.
In the latest of “huge” Spawn developments, McFarlane tells MTV that an Oscar-winning actor is attached to the remake that will never happen. The comic follows a mercenary whom is killed, but comes back from Hell as a reluctant soldier of the Devil.

“I continue writing pages here and there. I have a guy waiting in the sidelines, an Academy Award-winning actor,” he told the cabler also sharing the actor’s frustrations in McFarlane’s snail-like pace. “Every three weeks he’s on the phone going, ‘Todd, where’s the script? Todd, where’s the script?’ I can’t say who it is. You could [narrow it down].
“He came out to the office. He gave me his pitch, and I gave him mine,” McFarlane added. “The pitch I gave was that we could do ten of these for the next ten years and he wouldn’t have to be 22 for the rest of his life.”
On top of the live-action “Spawn” redo, McFarlane says that another animated series based on the character is in the works — and it’s shockingly progressed through voice recordings already.
“We have 90 minutes all set and ready to go, other than sending it to an animation house,” he said. “We’ve done all the voice recordings, we’ve done all the backgrounds, so the technology is way better than it was a decade ago; there are some spectacular things we can do now that we weren’t able to when we were on HBO.”
Who do you guys think the Oscar-winning actor is? The only information we have is that he’s 22. Who won an Academy Award at a younger age? The only information we could find is that Timothy Hutton won for best supporting role for Ordinary People when he was 20. That was a long time ago.
