The three stars of the original series are set to make a comeback
The new Star Wars films will be released every summer from 2015 to 2019, Disney has said.
Three new movies in the franchise will alternate with two standalone spin-offs, set in the same universe as the series.
The release schedule was revealed by Disney chairman Alan Horn at movie convention CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
Lost creator JJ Abrams has previously been named as the director of episode seven - due out in two years' time - with Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt doing the script.
Disney is injecting new life into the lucrative series after buying Lucasfilm last year for $4.05bn (£2.7bn).
Three stars from the original films - Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher - are set to reprise their iconic roles as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.
Disney has yet to confirm but the actors themselves, as well as creator George Lucas, have spoken cautiously about their involvement.
The spin-off films, lined up for 2016 and 2018, are expected to either feature some of the lesser characters or explore the back story of the major ones.
Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote The Empire Strikes Back, is involved with the scripts.
Disney will be keen to learn from criticism of the Star Wars prequels, episodes one, two and three.
Released between 1999 and 2005, the films were widely criticised for relying too much on special effects at the expense of storyline and character.
