Peter Jackson is officially finished working with Ian McKellen on The Hobbit trilogy. He made the announcement on his Facebook page, posting the above photo with the following caption:
Seconds ago we finished our last shot with Gandalf. The end of an incredible adventure that began in 1999. I'm feeling very sad right now.
I'm sad that we will never see Jackson take us into Middle Earth again. There are still a ton of stories that could be told, but the rights of most of those are still locked in with the Tolkien estate, and I seriously doubt they will ever let them go. It's no secret that they aren't happy with what Jackson has done with the classic novels, but the fans would beg to differ. No one could have adapted them better.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be released on December 13, 2013, and The Hobbit: There And Back Again has been set to open on December 17th, 2014.
