One of the big surprises at D23 is when John Lasseter showed fans the first 10 minutes of the upcoming Toy Story Halloween special, Toy Story of Terror.
What starts out as a fun road trip for the Toy Story gang takes an unexpected turn for the worse when the trip detours to a roadside motel. After one of the toys goes missing, the others find themselves caught up in a mysterious sequence of events that must be solved before they all suffer the same fate in this “Toy Story OF TERROR!”
The special is 30-minutes long, and it features several of our favorite characters from the Toy Story films. The original voice cast also returns such as Tom Hanks, Tim Allen,
Joan Cusack, Timothy Dalton, Don Rickles, Wallace Shawn, and Kristen Schaal. They’ll be joined by Carl Weathers, who voices Combat Carl and Combat Carl Jr., as well as Stephen Tobolowsky, who voices a hotel clerk.
What I loved about what was shown was that it pays tribute to almost every type of horror genre. I'm a huge horror movie buff, and it was so cool to see these characters put in this nightmarishly fun situation.
The movie opens with the characters watching an old black-and-white Dracula movie featuring a girl running from Dracula in a graveyard. It's revealed that the toys are watching it in the trunk of a car. The car ends up getting a flat tire and hits a bump, which throws Jessie (Cusack) into a tool box and is trapped. It's revealed that she is afraid of tight spaces because of all the time she spent in a box as an unused toy. The family ends up pulling off the highway and into a roadside hotel.
The family won't be able to get the car fixed until the morning so they are forced to stay in the hotel. The whole time Dalton's character, Mr. Pricklepants, is explaining how they are being set up for the perfect horror film scenario.
Once in the hotel room, Mr. Potato Head (Rickles) goes out to look around and never returns. So the group heads out on a mission to go and find him. They split up into groups, and while investigating Rex comes bumbling in and pushes them all into a vent in the floor. While looking around in the dark, Woody and Buzz come across Mr. Potato Head's arm, who starts to lead them into the direction where he is. A few other character are snatched up and taken in this sequence.
Woody, Buzz, and Jessie end up in a hotel bathroom where Woody and Buzz are taken, and Jessie is left alone where she is terrified. She starts to see and hear things. Then, from out of nowhere, Combat Carl shows up to warn Jessie of the dangers that are ahead and tries to get her to turn back. Combat Carl goes ahead to see if it's safe and in the process he disappears. Jessie is left alone in the bathtub.
The intensity starts to build as some kind of creature enters the bathroom, and all of a sudden, something jumps up and tears the shower curtain with its claws. That's where the first ten minutes ends.
What I saw was extremely entertaining, and I'm looking forward to seeing the whole thing when it's released.
The special comes from director Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman, and it premieres on ABC October 16th, 2013.
