During the pre-Christmas box office, Peter Jackson's Hobbit sequel topped all movies for the second straight weekend, edging out Anchorman 2 with $31.5 million.
The Desolation of Smaug has made more than $400 million worldwide, and $127.5 million domestically.
Will Ferrell's Anchorman, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, opened at #2 taking in $26.7 million to start and $40 million since opening Tuesday night.
Disney's Frozen fell to #3 this weekend with $19.1 million to bring its domestic haul to $191.5 million; American Hustle climbed to #4 after nationwide expansion with $19.1 million; and Saving Mr. Banks closes out the top 5 with $9.3 million.
The wide-release of 20th Century Fox's 3-D Walking With Dinosaurs made $7.3 million to start and opened at #8, while the third film in the Indian action series, Dhoom 3, set a record for a U.S. debut for a Bollywood export with a $3.3 million stateside debut for ninth place.
