In its third weekend, it was The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug leading all films at #1 over the post-Christmas weekend.
The film earned nearly $30 million to bring its domestic gross to $190.3 million, according to studio estimates on Sunday (Dec. 29).
Up one to #2 this weekend was Disney's Frozen, earning $28.9 million over the weekend and $248.4 million domestically after six weeks.
According to the AP, 2013 is poised to be a banner year at the box office, projected to surpass 2012's $10.8 billion by nearly 1 percent, making this the highest annual take ever.
Anchorman 2 came in at #3 with $20.2 million, while American Hustle held at #4 with $19.5 million.
As for new releases, it was Paramount's The Wolf of Wall Street featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, that had the biggest debut. It opened at #5 with $18.5 million. In it, Leo depicts Jordan Belfort, a wealthy stockbroker living the high life in the 1990s, losing it all after being convicted of fraud crimes related to stock market manipulation and running a penny stock boiler room.
Ben Stiller's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty debuted at #7 with $13 million. The comedian plays a day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action.
Keanu Reeves' martial-arts film 47 Ronin bombed, opening at #9 with $9.9 million. The movie is about a band of samurai set out to avenge the death and dishonor of their master at the hands of a ruthless shogun.
Much farther down is Justin Bieber's Believe, landing at #14 with just $2 million in its opening weekend.
