The Lego Movie was a hit over the weekend, debuting at #1 with an exceptional $69.1 million start. It's the biggest animated hit ever from Warner Bros., who has struggled in the category for years. It's also the biggest hit of the year so far, and reports say a sequel is already in development .
Garnering rave reviews from critics, the film is focused on an ordinary LEGO minifigure, mistakenly thought to be the extraordinary MasterBuilder, who is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil LEGO tyrant from gluing the universe together.
George Clooney's World War II caper, The Monuments Men, opened in second place with $22.7 million. Based-on-a-true-story tale about the mission to retrieve artwork stolen by the Nazis, the film stars Clooney alongside Matt Damon. Clooney serves as the director, co-writer, producer and star on the film.
Last weekend's top film, Ride Along, falls to #3 with $9.3 million this weekend and a total of $105 million; Disney's Frozen was at #4 with $6.9 million as it nears $400 million domestically; and That Awkward Moment closes out the top 5 with $5.5 million.
The final new release was The Weinstein Co.'s Vampire Academy, which opened at #7 with just $4.1 million. The PG-13 film, based on Richelle Mead's young adult novels, is about mortal vampires at a boarding school.
That's a wrap for this weekend. This upcoming week, look out for the release of Kevin Hart's romantic comedy, About Last Night; director Shana Feste's Endless Love; the anticipated reboot of Robocop; and Colin Farrell's Winter's Tale.
