Legendary Pictures was at San Diego Comic-Con today presenting several of their upcoming film projects. During the presentation, Legendary CEO Thomas Tull confirmed earlier reports that Gareth Edwards would be coming back to direct Godzilla 2. The lineup of monsters we will see in future installments of the franchise were also revealed in a fun video presentation from Project Monarch. Those additional monsters include Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. The crowd got pretty damn excited about these monsters coming in to join Godzilla. Edwards will start working on the project as soon as he's finished directing his Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm.
At the end of the panel, Legendary had a big surprise for attendees. The studio ended the panel with a teaser for a film called Skull Island, which will tell an origin story of another great beast... King Kong. The teaser takes us through the island and ends with King Kong standing up through the tree's beating on his chest and letting out a roar. The reveal was kind of anti-climatic, but it was still cool to see that they are making another King Kong flick.
I think it's safe to say that somewhere down the line King Kong and Godzilla will meet on the big screen again. Skull Island will be released on November 4th, 2016.
