In a recent interview, Jesse Eisenberg spoke briefly about playing Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. From the details about the character that leaked earlier this year, we are already aware that this is going to be a unique take on Superman’s arch nemesis. Eisenberg’s casting alone is probably the clearest indicator of that. In the interview, the actor confirms that he is indeed making the character his own and further explains how he worked with one of the writers to figure out a more real and modern approach.
"There are some indications of how the character should behave based on the script, and then an actor makes it his or her own,” Eisnberg told Total Film. “I got to know one of the writers Chris Terrio, and we were able to discuss things at length and figure out who this person is to create a real psychology behind what is, perhaps, in a comic book, a less than totally modern psychology. I can only say I've been asked to play an interesting role. A complicated, challenging person."
Listen here, Eisenberg. If you were the guy who reinvented Lex Luthor, you would have reinvented Lex Luthor. Oh, I guess that’s exactly what you and the writers are doing. I’ll go ahead and cancel that forensics team, which I said we wouldn’t need anyway.
Social Network references and his slightly confusing remark about the source material aside, Eisenberg’s comments make me even more anxious to see the role Lex will play in what is (sort of) being billed as a showdown between heroes. Especially with the info we received about what LexCorp have their hands on at the beginning of the film.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is being directed by Zack Snyder and is set to open in theaters March 25, 2016.
