Hollywood must smell blood in the water, because along with Eli Roth's upcoming shark attack movie Meg, another shark-related film is in development. Deadline says Jaume Collet-Serra, who has worked with Liam Neeson on the thrillers Unknown, Non-Stop, and Run All Night, is looking to take over directing duties from Louis Leterrier. Anthony Jaswinski wrote the screenplay, which made The Black List and is being described as a mixture of Jaws and Gravity.
A young twenty-something woman dealing with the recent death of her mother is surfing on an isolated beach and gets stranded 20 yards offshore on a buoy. What lies between her and the shore is a huge great white shark. She must find a way back to shore before succumbing to her injuries.
There's no word on who will star yet, but it's easy to see how this could be either a powerful career-builder for the right up-and-coming actress or a great showcase for an established star like Jennifer Lawrence. I'm just really, really hoping that Collet-Serra casts Neeson as the shark.
