Ice Cube is set to star in a film called Humbug, which is another reimagining of Charles Dickens’ classic tale A Christmas Carol. The spec script for the film was written by Todd R Jones and Earl Richey Jones, and apparently there was a big bidding war for the project between Universal Pictures, Disney, New Line and MGM. Universal ended up winning it.
In this new, modern-day retelling of the story, Cube will play "a wealthy real estate mogul shown a path to redemption by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future." It's really not that hard to imagine Cube playing a grumpy dude on Christmas.
This is a story that we've seen countless times. I've enjoyed most of the movies that have been made that are based on A Christmas Carol, but one of my favorites is Bill Murray's Scrooged. It's hard to imagine that that Humbug will be better than that. But it's got to have some potential, especially since there were four studios fighting to get their hands on it.
Tim Story is directing the film, and he's previously worked with Ice Cube on films such as Barbershop, Ride Along, and the upcoming Ride Along 2.
