Their new album may be called A Hundred Million Suns, but Snow Patrol's marketing strategy seems to have more to do with a hundred million iPhones.
Snow Patrol have announced that they will be the first band to release a custom application for Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch products, full of extra content for their most technophile fans. It's the 2008 equivalent of a CD insert or bonus DVD – but designed for geeks with up-to-date gizmos.
The Snow Patrol application will be available to download, offering any fan with an Apple touch-screen access to artwork, lyrics and behind-the-scenes photographs.
"It will be an interactive element - a digital booklet that will take you into the videos and content," Polydor product manager Liz Goodwin told Music Week. "For fans it will be a real must-have." Which is to say, it will be must-have for any fan in possession of a must-have iPhone, a must-have iPod Touch, a must-have data subscription plan and yet more must-have spending money.
A Hundred Million Suns is Snow Patrol's fifth album, their third since moving from sad-sack bedroom folk into major-label arena rock. It was recorded in Berlin and Ireland with longtime collaborator Jacknife Lee and will be released on October 27, 2008.
Snow Patrol's last record, Eyes Open, was the UK's bestselling album of 2006 – and that was with nary an iPhone in the land
