New Orleans rapper B.G. is going away ... for a long time, after being sentenced to 14 years in federal prison on Wednesday (July 18 ) for gun possession and witness tampering charges.
According to Nola.com, the 31-year-old rapper (real name: Christopher Dorsey) arrived in court in a standard jail jumpsuit, but for some reason sat in a wheelchair. He was facing up to 40 years, after admitting guilt back in December 2011 by pleading guilty.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurice Landrieu sought a lengthier sentence, claiming his music profited off the NOLA's "cycle of violence" in court on Wednesday.
While U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan agreed, expressing her disdain for B.G.'s music videos, she declined to use them as a basis for the longer sentence. The judge said she believed that the rapper's songs and videos "may have contributed to the murders of young people" in New Orleans, noting that he extolled retaliation and fostered an atmosphere of violence.
B.G. was arrested back in November 2009-- alongside two others -- following a traffic stop in New Orleans. During a search of the vehicle, police found three guns, along with loaded magazines and two extended magazine clips.
Being a convicted felon, he faces a lot of time behind bars.
He originally pleaded not guilty, back in February 2010 and was released on bond. However, he was indicted on a new witness tampering charge in May 2011, after authorities found out he had one of the other men arrested (Demounde Pollard) sign a false affidavit claiming ownership of the weapons.
By pleading guilty in court, he admitted guilt to all charges and was facing 40 years in prison.
While he confessed, B.G.'s attorneys made it clear that he was not cooperating, staying in line with his "no-snitch" philosophy, which the rapper seems to point to in one of his last music video: "This f***ing ratting shh**, man, this sh** here is getting out of hand / Man, it's call T-Y-C. Take Your Charge."
B.G. was one of New Orleans' brightest rap stars at one time. He signed with Cash Money Records at the age of 13, and enjoyed platinum success in the late 1990s with the LP, Chopper City In The Ghetto, which featured the smash hit, "Bling Bling." He was also a member of the Hot Boys, a hip-hp supergroup comprised of Lil Wayne, Juvenile and Young Turk.
Throughout his career, he released countless albums and mixtapes, his last being 2010's HollyHood.
