One of the most talked about tracks on J. Cole’s new album Born Sinner is the introspective “Let Nas Down.” On the song, Cole talks about how he got word from Nas, one of his musical inspirations, that the Queens legend was disappointed in the young emcee’s choice to release “Work Out” as a single from his first LP.
So what did Nas think of Cole’s song about letting down his idol? During a chance encounter on an airplane, Cole let Nas listen to the track.
“I played him the song, gave him my headphones. I was trying to hear what part of the song he was on,” said Cole in an interview with BET. “Like a minute into the song he was like ‘wooo’, beating my chair. Just overall he was wowed. The look on his face was like… honored that I would make that, highly impressed. That was a huge moment for me.”
J. Cole’s sophomore album Born Sinner is available for purchase today.
