  • Michael Jackson Hologram to Perform at Billboard Music Awards

Michael Jackson may not be around to tour in support of his new posthumous album, Xscape, but the annual Billboard Music Awards will still feature a performance from the late King of Pop. A Michael Jackson hologram will take the stage at Sunday night's event.
According to the Los Angeles Times, plans for the awards ceremony include the hologram image of Jackson performing the new Xscape track "Slave to the Rhythm." Sources affiliated with the show said the event will be a "history-making performance" and that the "technology is so spectacular and groundbreaking."

Although the show's producers had tried to keep a lid on their plans, news of the Jackson hologram emerged as the result of a lawsuit filed by two tech companies in an attempt to block the performance. Hologram USA Inc. (which acquired the rights to the patents from Digital Domain, creator of the Tupac Shakur hologram at Coachella 2012) and Musion Das Hologram Ltd. filed the suit on Thursday, claiming that their product was being used without permission by a competitor to create the image of Michael Jackson. The lawsuit was rejected by the judge, who said that there wasn't enough evidence to show that the Billboard Awards' plan would violate patents, nor was there sufficient evidence that their patent had been used to create the hologram.

The 2014 Billboard Music Awards will air on Sunday, May 18th at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Hurry up and watch it before it's taken down. I thought it was really cool. But you can tell in the face it wasn't Michael. Seems like they did the same thing they did with 2Pac & Josh Harraway. Had a lookalike do the dance moves and the lip syncing and then CGI it from there. I liked this performance, but with the stage being back so far, I don't think it was as good as the 2Pac performance. Michael is back too far and still gives it a kind of video projection feel. 2Pac seemed like he was standing right next to Snoop.

Shame though, I know Michael is going to get the first ever Hologram tour. I just know it, and it will go over well since he always sold a lot more records then rappers anyways. But Amaru could've and should've done this to promote a album first. But I guess Amaru or Afeni didn't want to cough up the big bucks, but sometimes you have to in order to make a even bigger gain.

No way man, they added all MJ gimmicks he used to make in 1h30 performance just in 4min. Way too much, plus he's not punchy enough and his face, damn... A mix of Boy George & Keira Knightley

Edit: added vid from MJ's Vevo so it won't get deleted

I do not think that was actually CGI's Michael. His face looked similar but not exact. Plus he was lip singing to a song he never performed, so how did they do that? Makes me think they took a lookalike, recorded him singing and dancing all of Michael's moves and from there used the CGI to cover his face. Where as 2Pac was Josh Harraway but that performance incorporated real movements that 2Pac made during his house of blues performances.

And as I stated before, I think 2Pac's was better because he seemed more on the front stage, right next to snoop. Michaels was really far back and seemed more like it was on the wall due to the distance. But even with that said, it was amazing. I just hope if they tour they fix this and have him seem closer.

They should make a official remix of either Niggaz Nature mixed with Human Nature, They Dont Give A Fuck About Us mixed with They Don't Care About Us, Where U Been mixed with Wanna Be Where Your Are or Who Do U Love Mixed with Behind The Mask, and put both holograms together! That shit would be amazing!

Yes but it would take a lot more money to do that all digitally while the hologram performed moves. I am sure they got that lip syncing done when they had someone in the motion capture suit.

I agree, it is great. I can't wait to see the way they turn this into a commercialized technology where you can just press a button on your remote or a console like projector and boom your favorite artist is infront of you doing
                        songs.

That is essentially the future. But I think before then, alive artist might use this as a way to do multiple concerts or shows at once lol
