  • Faith Evans Recalls Puff Daddy Signing Her After Only One Session

Faith Evans details being recruited to Bad Boy Records after assisting with vocals on Usher’s album.

According to Florida-born singer Faith Evans, an impromptu recording session with Puff Daddy was all it took for her to become a member of the Bad Boy Records family.

While speaking with Vlad TV, the songstress revealed that she just so happened to be dropping her daughter’s father off at the studio when Puff needed a singer to assist with two lines on the Usher album he was executive producing.

“To be honest, I was just there to take my daughter’s dad to the studio,” Faith Evans said. “They were actually trying to get a song placed on Usher’s album, which Puff was executive producing at that time…So, I wasn’t even there in the capacity of looking for a record deal. He needed someone to sing one line and they knew that I could sing, so they called me out the lounge…So, when I went in and did these two lines and rearranged them. I asked him ‘Mr. Puff, do you mind if I change it around a little bit?’ And I did…And when I came out he asked me did I want to sign to his new label. Just like that.”

Prior to speaking on her studio session with Puff, Faith was asked about the moment she chose to transition from singer to professional recording artist.

“I would not be able to ever tell you that because I really have no idea,” she said. “Other than God and my consistent drive to be a singer. I never—It’s not like I grew up thinking I was gonna be a recording artist. But I always knew that I was going to be a singer somewhere. At one point, I thought I might end up being in the hotel lounge with a band making cool money…And then once I realized I had the talent to actually write songs and the harmonies and all that stuff—I was pretty proficient at recording myself way before I was an actual recording artist.”
