  • Al Green vs Marvin Gaye vs Otis Redding vs Sam Cooke

Greatest soul dude to ever do it? Why?

Imo Al Green. His run of albums is only surpassed by the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder. He's imo one of the greatest artists of all time. Call Me and The Belle Album are the 2 killer-no-fillers in his discography.

#2 would be Sam Cooke for me. He was an incredible songwriter and vocalist aswell and his career was unfortunately cut short.

#3 is probably Otis, because Dock of the Bay and I'm a Marvin hater

Rolling Stone recently ranked Whats Going On #1 album of all time which makes it the most overrated album of all time. 3 decent songs + filler lmao. But I get it - it's that social message crap. It should've been either Exile on Main St. or Songs in the Key of Life. Or maybe A Love Supreme?

Vice wrote a funny article about Marvin Gaye saying "how much of an asshole should you be for your own father to shoot you" or something like that

    Marvin Gaye hands down.

"If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
If you were of the world, the world will love you as it's own; but because you are not of the world,
but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you."

    -John 15:18-19

"I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death."
    -Revelation 1:18

    "They claim that I'm violent."
    -Tupac Shakur

Just listen to "Here, My Dear". That album is so ahead of It's time. Written, produced & arranged by Marvin.

Its ok, far from great elevator music

Does it have anything on Greens or Cookes songwriting skills?

Marvin Gaye by a long shot. Reason why isn't because he made the most masterpieces. It was because he didn't just have amazingly soulful music, but he made radio worthy music as well. Otis Redding may have made some of the most beautiful and soulful music on earth, but not a .ot of it got mainstream exposure.

Therefore, because Marvin Gaye got more public exposure, our collective memory of him is strongly tied, and his legend is forever burning. As far as beauty, art, etc, Sam Cooke definitely nailed it. Otis Redding as well. But the people chose Marvin Gaye as the leader of the pack, so thats what we were all taught growing up in the next generation, and it stuck.

Al Green and Marvin were the Mainstream legends, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke were more of the artistic poets and singers.
