The New Orleans rapper believes he first coined the term, used to evoke the shine of elaborate jewellery, on his song 'Bling, Bling'.
He told MTV: "I'm the one who created the term. If you go back to the song I'm the one singing it. If you go back to the video you'll see that's me."
Lil Wayne also played down reports that he idolised the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
He added: "That's been blown out of proportion totally, I don't look up to Nirvana, I don't look up to Kurt Cobain. I admire Nirvana and I like Kurt Cobain just like a lot of other people
"It stops there. I'm not a fanatic, I can't tell you no personal things about him, I haven't read the book, I don't plan on reading it."
