Troubled rapper DMX appeared before an Arizona judge on Thursday (December 16), pleading guilty to a probation violation and was handed a one year jail sentence.
According to the Phoenix New Times, the rapper (real name: Earl Simmons) admitted to violating terms of his probation by drinking alcohol, and asked Judge Christine Mulleneaux to help him to no avail.
Prior to sentencing, X told the judge, "I did make the effort that I could, and I appreciate any help you can give me."
Judge Mulleneaux wasn't sympathetic to X's pleas for leniency though, explaining that "substance abuse issues are at the root of this problem," adding that the rapper's "criminal history goes back to 1988" and it will "continue if you don't take care of your mental health."
She said that DMX has tested positive for cocaine five times during the length of his probation, and his drug use is a way of self-medicating himself for an undiagnosed mental condition.
X was arrested on November 18 at his home in Cave Creek and charged with violating his probation, due to failing court-mandated drug tests and refusing to undergo treatment and counseling.
He has been held without bail since the arrest.
According to the paper, the rapper smiled after receiving a sentence of a year in jail and community probation, as he was led out of the court room.
