Warren G: Still G-Funkin' It Up

    By Tim “Styles” Sanchez

Long Beach producer/artist Warren G has been the talk of the internet lately due to his association with male enhancement pills. Some have laughed and made jokes about the pill commercials while others in turn have offered their support. Warren also released a tribute song to his longtime friend Nate Dogg who unfortunately passed away due to complications of two strokes. The hearfelt song which also features Latoiya Williams called “This Is Dedicated To You” is now available on iTunes. Warren G caught up with AllHipHop.com to answer questions about the male enhancement pills, the Nate Dogg tribute and his new music projects.
AllHipHop.com: You have been in the news a lot lately for those commercials. What's the whole deal with your involvement with these pills?

Warren G: These are male enhancement pills called AffirmXL. I did the commercials because I'm a partner and working with the company. I'm not somebody who just got hired or just going to get the check. I'm a part of the company. What people have to realize is that there are a lot of men in the United States and all over the world who suffer from diabetes. Erectile Dysfunction is a problem that occurs when you have diabetes. This is just something to help guys like that maintain a regular sex life. Alcoholism also causes ED. There's young guys out there that suffer from this. At home you want to be able to satisfy your partner and something like this can prevent arguments. It's a cool pill and it works. I've tried it. I loved it when I tried it.

AllHipHop.com: When the news broke about the commercials, they stated that you hadn't signed a contract and that you were contacting your lawyer.

Warren G: That wasn't true. We were in the works – I'll put it like that. It's a cool male enhancement pill, better than Extenze and Viagra. It's a natural herb.

AllHipHop.com: I noticed in the press release you were like, “I don't take this regularly.”

Warren G: I don't. You can also use this for energy. It's not just for sex. It also helps with energy.

AllHipHop.com: I just thought that it would be fair to get your side of the story on it. A lot of people have made jokes about this whole thing on Twitter and Message Boards.

Warren G: Yeah but it's all good. This is a good thing. You should try it. I gave it to some of my buddies and pretty soon they're going to start blowing my phone up asking for more.

AllHipHop.com: You made a new song for Nate Dogg called “This Is Dedicated To You.” Tell us about that please.

Warren G: I wanted to drop a song to let everybody how I felt and about what he was going through while he was in therapy. Everybody had been hitting me up on Facebook and Twitter asking me about Nate Dogg for the longest time. I put it in to song-form to let him know what's up and pay tribute to him at the same time.

AllHipHop.com: When did you decide to make this song? Was this planned before he passed?

Warren G: I had that song already done before he died. Cee-Lo was supposed to be on the record but he had to go overseas so we couldn't get him. I was trying to get it out just to make people aware and to let them know what was going on with him. As a friend, I've got to push and keep stuff coming in for him. I've got to ride for him. You don't have cats that stay down like that in these days anymore.

AllHipHop.com: Did his death catch you by surprise or had you been bracing yourself for it?

Warren G: It caught me by surprise. I had seen him before I went on the road with Snoop. I came back during the All-Stars and we had so much stuff to do, that I couldn't go see him. Then we went right back on tour again and it was during that tour that I found out about his death. I used to see him in therapy and he was progressing. He was getting better.

AllHipHop.com: So there was nothing that indicated that he was taking a turn for the worse?

Warren G: No indication at all. It just happened.

AllHipHop.com: Did you think that Nate was going to ever get back on the mic again?

Warren G: Luther Vandross did it and he had two strokes – maybe three – and he was able to do it. I know that Nate would've gotten back on the mic. He was a strong cat. He was gearing more towards gospel. That's what he was going more towards when he had the stroke. He has a choir that he put together.

AllHipHop.com: Has any of this had any impact on how you look after your own health?

Warren G: I'm in the Gym three times a week. And if I'm not there I'm doing it at home with this machine called The Rack. In between I do push-ups and sit-ups. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday I go boxing.

AllHipHop.com: This new track that did for Nate Dogg, its going to benefit his family?

Warren G: Yes indeed. It's going to benefit his family. He's got kids. We want to make sure that they go to college and still live a good life. It's also to help his mother. That's what it's about.

AllHipHop.com: When Nate passed I saw quite a few benefits set to take place.

Warren G: Yeah, I don't know how official they are but I know the Trust Fund is official. Any other thing I really don't know about.

AllHipHop.com: There were some fans where Nate's money went? I also saw a few ask why aren't his homeboys paying for things? What's your response to that?

Warren G: I didn't hear any of that. People are going to say what they're going to say and do their talking. Nate had people looking out for him, trust me. That's all I can tell you.

AllHipHop.com: I'm glad that somebody did a real tribute for Nate. He did a lot of songs with people in the industry and I was disappointed to see few tributes.

Warren G: I've got the instrumental for the song that I've sent out to DJ's. Hopefully some of those artists will get on it and do some remixes. That would be dope if some of these cats do remix it. The music on that track is incredible.

AllHipHop.com: What music projects are you working on for yourself?

Warren G: I'm working on Regulate: The G-Funk Era Part 2. Before that I've got an EP that I'm going to drop with Nate Dogg. We've got albums of material – at least two or three of just me and Nate. Just like the song, the publishing from the EP will be able to benefit his kids and his mother.

AllHipHop.com: When will the EP be released?

Warren G: This Summer. I'm working on it right now. I've got some people that I've reached out to for collaborations. I'm just waiting on them.

AllHipHop.com: The first G-Funk Era album is a West Coast classic, so Part 2 has some big shoes to fill.

Warren G: I'm going to go in on it. I'm doing a Part 2, 3 and 4. As long as it's banging from top to bottom – it's all good.
