As expected, Pittburgh rapper Mac Miller's debut album, Blue Slide Park, tops the charts ... making it the first independently-distributed debut album has achieved the feat since the mid-1990s.
The album sold 144,000 copies in its first week, helping it hit #1 on the Billboard 200.
The last (and only previous) album to reach the feat was Tha Dogg Pound's Dogg Food debut, opening at #1 in November 1995 with 278,000 sold. The LP was released through Death Row/Interscope, but independently distributed via Priority. Blue Slide Park dropped through Rostrum Records, and was distributed by INgrooves via Fontana Distribution (Universal Music Group Distribution's indie arm).
Later within Billboard's top tier was Wale's Ambition, which fell to #15 in its second with 41,000 sold after opening at #2.
Tyrese's Open Invitation, which debuted at #9 last week, fell to #18 this week with 33,000 sold.
Outside the top 20, new releases come from Tech N9ne and Pusha T.
Tech N9ne's new Collabos album, Welcome To Strangeland, debuted at #21 with 26,000 sold in its first week. It features works from his Strange Music roster, including Jay Rock, Brotha Lynch Hung, Krizz Kaliko, and Kutt Calhoun. Its Tech's second album this year, following All 6's & 7's which earned the Kansas City rapper his highest charting album of his career back in June.
Pusha T's new solo project, Fear of God II: Let Us Pray, opened at #60 selling nearly 9,000 copies in its first week. The retail mixtape project features Odd Future's Tyler The Creator, Kanye West and Young Jeezy; while production boasts The Neptunes, Nottz and Hit-Boy. The Clipse co-founder released Fear Of God earlier this year as a free mixtape. Although presented through Decon, FOG2 also features G.O.O.D Music and Re-Up Gang Records backing.
