As part of Life+Times' series "Decoded," they sit down with A$AP Rocky to discuss the meaning behind the intro track of his debut album, Long.Live.A$AP.
The Harlem rapper says his rough upbringing inspired the song, saying, at times, he felt like he was gonna die in the streets before he found his calling. "Growing up between Bronx and Harlem, I felt like it was times I thought I wouldn't even make it. I thought maybe I'mma die in these streets or I'mma die in jail," A$AP said.
He also says it's conceptual, noting "I'm putting myself into the existence of like a 22-year-old, New Orleans, Magnolia kind of trapper or something like that. I feel like that's where I can go with my music and stuff. Sometimes you can speak in third person, and be another person."
