Machine Gun Kelly covered the new winter issue of YRB magazine, where he replaces his usual grunge look for something slightly more stylish.
In the issue, which hits newsstands later this month, the Cleveland-bred rapper discusses a range of topics, from his rise to fame and daughter, to his rough childhood and what he's learned from the music industry thus far.
Below are highlights from the interview:
On his childhood: "I was bullied a lot in school, but because I was a hothead, I always just dealt with it. When rap battling started, that was a huge turning point in my life. One day there was a battle going on in the schoolyard and I decided to jump in on it."
His musical idols: "It's kind of funny that I always seem to idolize the wrong people. Most of them are strung out drug addicts like Kurt Cobain, DMX, or other dudes like that."
On lessons learned in the music biz: "I have learned many things along the way, but by far the biggest lesson for me has been to treasure what you have.... You become friends with artists and they act as if they are there for you through the ups and downs, but you learn after time they too fall off the map."
On his daughter: "My daughter means everything to me. It took three years for my daughter not to run away from me because she wasn't accustomed to seeing me that often. I would return home from being on the road, and it would take her about an hour to even smile at me..."
