As one of the most famous couples in the world, Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s private lives are constantly under public scrutiny, but now the two superstars are among a handful of celebrities whose personal financial information has been thrown into the public sphere as well.
According to TMZ, besides Jay-Z and Beyoncé, the social security numbers, mortgage reports, credit card data, banking statements, and other information of Paris Hilton, Mel Gibson, Ashton Kutcher, Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears, Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, FBI Director Robert Mueller, and Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck were also posted on an undisclosed Internet site.
Billboard reports that the Twitter handle associated with the website where the information was revealed also contained an anti-police message written in Russian.
The page featuring LAPD Chief Beck included the phrase “#YouCantCornerTheDorner” referring to former Los Angeles police officer Christopher Dorner who went on a killing spree last month mostly targeting other LAPD officers after he felt he was unfairly removed from the force. Dorner has become somewhat of a cult figure and a symbol of the fight against police corruption in some circles.
“People get mad at us, go on the Internet and try to find information about us, and post it all on one site,” said Los Angeles police Commander Andrew Smith.
The hackers did not explain how they received the information of any of the victims or why those particular individuals were chosen as targets.
The FBI and the LAPD have both announced that they will open respective investigations about the leaks.
