GREER, S.C. -
The rapper known as DMX has been arrested in South Carolina and charged with driving under the influence.
Greenville County jail officials say the 42-year-old, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was arrested early Friday morning. He was also charged with not having a driver's license.
Trooper Bob Beres with the SC Highway says a dispatch got a call about a car driving erratically on Highway 29 in Greenville Co. just before 11 pm. He says a trooper pulled over a 1978 Plymouth Station wagon driven by Simmons. He says Simmons consented to a field sobriety test and failed.
Simmons was arrested last year in Spartanburg County for suspicion of driving without a license. In that case, he was released after paying a fine.
Jail records show Simmons has been released. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.
Simmons was arrested in a Phoenix suburb in 2011 after a trooper clocked him driving at 102 mph. He had recently finished a stint in prison on probation revocation for failing to submit to drug testing and driving without a license.
DMX was either wasted, exhausted, or both following his DUI arrest Friday morning ... because he passed the hell out once he got inside the squad car -- and TMZ has obtained dash cam footage of the entire bust.
TMZ broke the story ... the rapper was popped in South Carolina around 3AM Friday after police determined he had been driving under the influence.
It wasn't immediately clear whether X was busted for alcohol or some other substance -- but based on the dash cam footage, it appears to have been for alcohol ... and not just because X was a little sleepy.
In the footage, the cop asks X if he's been boozing, and X says he had one drink -- but later it sounds like he admits to drinking "4 or 5" (the audio is pretty bad). Despite the drinks, X insists he's not too drunk to drive. The cop doesn't buy it.
X was booked for DUI and hauled to a nearby station. He was released from custody roughly an hour later.
