Schoolboy Q is clearly not a stan for his fellow Black Hippy members. Meaning, he can respect and appreciate their talents, but he can also admit when he feels like another rapper may have edge them out in a certain area. That is the case for the 2013 MTV Video Music Award category for Best Hip-Hop Video.
Fellow TDE emcee and collaborator on Schoolboy’s latest track “Collard Greens,” Kendrick Lamar, is up for the Best Hip Hop Video moonman for “Swimming Pools (Drank).” He is going against A$AP Rocky’s “F*ckin Problems,” Drake’s “Started From The Bottom,” J. Cole’s “Power Trip,” and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Can’t Hold Us.” According to Q, Macklemore should be walking away with the trophy that night.
“Of course I’m rooting for Kendrick, but Macklemore probably should win. I’m pretty sure Kendrick believes that too,” Schoolboy told MTV’s Rap Fix Live. ”We appreciate good stuff, and that video was crazy. I appreciate what Macklemore did with that video. I liked it better than Kendrick’s.”
Schoolboy also explains the delay of his album Oxymoron. The Los Angeles rapper says he is just waiting on sample clearances to drop the project. He reveals that frequent musical partner A$AP Rocky will appear on a track called “Californication” that will be on the LP.
