As you know Kendrick Lamar has caught some extra shine time off his verse on Control, especially the King of NY line, but did you know he is actually doing his best Kurupt impression? Did you know Kurupt wrote that line? One of the most controversial lines is the NY line but Kendrick didn't come up with that.
Kendrick did a track with Kurupt about 3 years ago where Kurupt originally used the "King of New York" "important like the pope" line way before Kendrick. Kurupt wrote that line and Kendrick basically bit it from him. Listen to the way Kendrick is flowing on control, with the aggressive flow and deepened voice, he's doing a Kurupt impersonation complete with Kurupt's words and all. To me this is why it really made no sense that Kendrick would think he was King of NY, I don't believe he really thinks that. Or maybe he does, but if he does he didn't explain it in his own rhymes he used Kurupt's words to explain that. Just listen to Kurupt's flow on the track with Kendrick, and then listen to the way Kendrick is flowing on Control.
Everyone's praising Kendrick for this verse like he's doing something new and creative but he's really just channeling Kurupt. Now I'm not hating on the guy, just pointing out that Kurupt basically birthed that verse and I truly believe that. (I'm not trying to convince you of that I'm only expressing my own opinion of the situation.) That's all. These new West Coast artists wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for OG's like the K-U-R-U-P-T. He's still influencing top moments in hip hop and is why he is one of the illest ever. His fingerprints are on Kendrick's Control verse whether you know it or not.
