Exclusive: "I was having fun," Method Man says. "I didn't care about the things that people normally care about like radio play and who's gonna like this song, who's gonna like that song."
With this past Saturday (November 15) marking the 20th anniversary of the release of Method Man’s debut album Tical, the Wu-Tang Clan emcee addressed the making of the record in a recently released interview with HipHopDX.
Breaking down the milestone, Meth said the album “absolutely changed my life.”
“Def Jam gave me a shot,” he added in a clip that premiered as a part of today’s DX Daily. “Steve Rifkind gave me a shot before that but Def Jam gave me a shot to do something solo and I appreciate it.”
Admitting to not being concerned with commercial or industry politics at the time, Meth said simply, “I didn’t care.”
“I was having fun,” he said. “When I say I didn’t care, I didn’t care about the things that people normally care about like radio play and who’s gonna like this song, who’s gonna like that song. It was just fun.”
Asked about his collaboration with fellow Wu rapper Raekwon on the album’s song “Meth Vs. Chef,” Meth recalled competing for the track and writing the lyrics in the studio.
“It was one of those joints where he wanted it and I wanted the song too,” he said. “We kind of battled for it. It was just one of those records that just happens. Like when you get a shot that just happens and you keep it.”
