  • Royce Da 5'9 Recalls Past Feud With Proof & D12

Royce Da 5'9 speaks on what inspired "hi Rihanna" line from BET Hip Hop Awards cypher.

During an appearance on ESPN’s “Highly Questionable,” Detroit, Michigan rapper Royce Da 5’9 recalled ending his feud with the late Proof. Prior to ending his feud with the D12 rapper, Royce says there was “disdain” between himself and those in D12 for years.

According to the rapper, he and Proof were ultimately able to talk out their differences with one another. Although the two were able to squash their feud, he says they were both armed with guns during their exchange with one another and as a result were arrested by police.

Both Motor City rappers ended up in jail cells next to one another following their arrest.

“Just being young. Having disagreements,” Royce Da 5’9 said when asked about his beef with Proof and D12. “It was the big competitive thing. So, it was disdain between myself and D12 for many years. It just came to a point when we finally seen each other everything came to a head and we kinda—He was able to express to me some things. And I was like ‘Okay, so this wasn’t true. That wasn’t true.’ And I was able to do the same with him. The only problem is we both pulled out weapons and the police got involved. And we both got arrested. And we were able to talk while we were in jail and reconcile. And we went on tour after that. And we were back to being the best of friends after that.”

Prior to speaking on Proof, Royce discussed his “hi Rihanna” line from the Shady 2.0 cypher at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards. He explained that he was inspired to shout out Rihanna during the cypher after she told him she was a fan of one of his records.

“I just wanted to tell Rihanna ‘hi.’ The plan was to say ‘hi’ to the young lady,” he said in a video posted on XXLMag.com. “That’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to say ‘hi’ to the young lady. And I wanted people to be entertained by it. That’s what inspired it. I met her backstage…I was performing with ‘Em and she was about to go on stage to perform with him as well. So, we caught each other on the side of the stage. And she was like ‘That was you on that song?’ She was like ‘I love that song.’ And I was like ‘Really, wow.’ So, that’s why I said it in the verse, ‘If you ever tell me that you love my music again, we go together.’”

Royce Da 5’9’s appearance on “Highly Questionable” comes days after he and DJ Premier released their PRhyme album. The duo are scheduled to begin their "PRhyme: The Tour" in February 2015.
