Hip-hop and basketball have been intertwined since Kurtis Blow’s “Basketball,” and rappers like Cam’ron and Jadakiss are carrying on tradition, sponsoring teams in the Entertainers Basketball Classic (EBC) tournament.
Hosted by Joe Budden’s girlfriend Tahiry Jose and former Bell Biv DeVoe member Michael Bivins, the annual tourney takes place at Harlem’s legendary Rucker Park, airing on New York City’s MSG Network Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. EST.
The teams are mostly sponsored by New York-bred MCs. Participants include Team Cam’ron, Jadakiss’s Team 914, Maino’s Hustle Hard, Ron Browz’s Ether Boy Records, Team Webstar, Angie Martinez All-Stars and baller/rapper Ron Artest’s Tru Warriors.
Tonight, the show’s third episode, will highlight NBA MVP Kobe Bryant’s memorable 2002 participation in the streetball contest. –John Kennedy
