While Michael Jackson never got to cut his 51st birthday cake, Q-Tip is commemorating the late legend’s forthcoming birthday with a party at Manhattan’s Nokia Theatre.
Dubbed “Long Live the King! A Birthday Celebration for Michael Jackson,” the celebration will take place on August 29, with doors opening at 10 p.m. and DJing by Q-Tip, Mark Ronson and DJ Spinna.
“Michael Jackson was a huge influence on my music and was an inspiration to me and so many others,” Q-Tip said via press release. “I want to bring people together to celebrate the man, his music and his legacy that will undoubtedly live on forever!”
Tickets for the event go on sale Friday (July 31), for $25 via ticketmaster.com. XXL magazine also paid tribute to the pop icon—who died in June of cardiac arrest—earlier this month, releasing the special collector’s issue XXL Presents Michael Jackson.
After the MJ party, the grind continues for Q-Tip. The Queens rapper/producer is adding “author” to his résumé, with his forthcoming book, Industry Rules. The book—named for Tip’s lyric from “Check the Rhime”—will be published by Ballantine Books in 2010, marking the 20-year anniversary of A Tribe Called Quest’s first album, People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. Industry Rules will focus on topics like Tip’s personal experiences, perspectives, and inspirations.
As XXLMag.com previously reported, Q-Tip is also liberating his shelved 2002 album Kamaal the Abstract on September 15 via Battery Records. The album is solely produced by Tip, with members of jazz legend Miles Davis’ band also making contributions. –John Kennedy
