Getting a record deal is like getting a loan from the bank.
The artist owes for all the upfront costs involved ,including recording and video costs.
If the album does really well ,you might be able to pay the record company back and make a little profit.
If the album tanks, the the artist is on the hook for all costs.
If the record company believes in the artist they may put another album out for you but if that one tanks... your on the hook for both albums, eventually landing the artist in bankruptcy."Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the face...." Mike Tyson

It's all about keeping recording & video costs low until a Hit song is established.
TLC sold 17 million copies of crazy, sexy, cool and the girls only made around 1 million to split 3 ways, before taxes, but also had expensive videos ,which helped sell the album, but took away from their overall profitsLast edited by jackcorgi; 05-22-2020, 12:54 PM."Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the face...." They may have just got paid for the recording session ,or they could have gotten points on the album but I doubt it.
By the time Michael Jacksons thriller album ,mike was able to earn almost $1 dollar per album sold and he was a well known ,multi-platinum selling artist ."Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the face...." Mike Tyson

I dont know any specific details on the deals suge made with his people.
As for eazy and the d.o.c. ... I would think that at that point the doc was paid off completely and wouldn't receive any future money from that particular work with eazy, but eazy would have no right to anything the doc did in the future.
I think eazy was making $0.25 -$0.50 per copy of the chronic.
I think that deal was reached to drop any "charges" that eazy could have brought against suge for strong arming eazy and taking dr dres contract from him.
Kind of like how suge paid Orlando Anderson to testify that suge didnt do any of the beating or kicking that night at the mgm."Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the face...." Mike Tyson
