  • NBA Fines J.R. Smith For Untying Player's Shoelaces

During the New York Knicks' 92-80 win against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday (Jan. 5), J.R. Smith made the highlight reels ... but not for his play. Instead, for some untying the shoelaces of the Mavs' Shawn Marion.

For the incident, the NBA fined Smith $50,000 Wednesday (Jan. for "recurring instances of unsportsmanlike conduct", reports ESPN.com.

He was also warned by the league to "refrain from further conduct of this nature" before the Knicks' next game on Tuesday (Jan. 7). Despite the warning, Smith tried the same thing during the game, reaching down at Detroit Pistons big man Greg Monroe's shoes while lined up at the free throw lane.

"I've never seen it done in an NBA game, put it that way, in all the years I've been around," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said.

The troublesome Smith was suspended the first five games this season, without pay, for violating the NBA's anti-drug policy in the offseason. And, in November, he was fined $25,000 for sending what the NBA deemed a "hostile" tweet to Detroit's Brandon Jennings after Jennings questioned the credentials of Smith's brother, Chris, a former Knicks guard.
