  • Knicks Exploring J.R. Smith Trade After Fines

After numerous on- and off-court incident, the New York Knicks are looking to unload guard J.R. Smith.

According to ESPN.com, sources say the team has become increasingly frustrated with Smith's transgressions, and have been exploring trade scenarios. One source said the Knicks are "fed up."

Smith was fined $50,000 by the NBA on Wednesday (Jan. 8 ) for "recurring instances of unsportsmanlike conduct" following his shoelace stunts in the Knicks' past two games -- where he untied the shoelaces of opposing players.

Following the fine, coach Mike Woodson hinted at that frustration, calling Smith's conduct "unacceptable" in an interview with ESPN New York 98.7 FM's "The Stephen A. Smith and Ryan Ruocco Show."

"I'm not happy about this, because he was warned, he comes back and he makes the same mistake, and it's not right," Woodson said. "It's just got to stop. I keep saying this every time something pops up, but it's got to stop."

Smith, however, apologized via Twitter Wednesday, writing (@TheRealJRSmith): "Huge apologies to my team, to the league an most of all you the fans! #JRSmithSigningOff"

The Knicks can't trade Smith until Jan.15th, because the team is over the salary cap and Smith signed for more than 120 percent of his previous salary. He also has two seasons left after this one on a three-year, $18 million contract.
