  • Detroit Pistons Fire Head Coach Maurice Cheeks

After just 50 games as head coach, the Detroit Pistons have fired Maurice Cheeks, the franchise said in a statement Sunday (Feb. 9).

"This was a difficult decision for the organization to make but we needed to make a change," Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said. "We have great respect for Maurice and appreciate his hard work."

ESPN reports that assistant coach John Loyer will be formally named interim coach before Detroit's home game Monday (Feb. 10).

Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins is said to be one of the primary contenders for the new job, after being interviewed by the Pistons last summer. However, sources said that Pistons owner Tom Gores could elect to wait until the offseason before bringing in a full-time replacement for Cheeks.
