  • Kevin Garnett Rejoins the Minnesota Timberwolves in trade from the Brooklyn Nets

Its nice to see Garnett Go back to where he started with the Timberwolves, he can be a valuable mentor to a young team.

The Brooklyn Nets traded the 38-year-old future Hall of Famer back to the T'wolves, for whom he played his first 12 NBA seasons, two people with knowledge of the trade told USA TODAY Sports. The Nets received forward Thaddeus Young in exchange. The people requested anonymity because the teams had not announced the trade.

Garnett had a no-trade clause but will waive it to rejoin Minnesota, the people said.

Timberwolves coach and president Flip Saunders coached Garnett during the franchise's only eight playoff appearances, from 1997 to 2004. Saunders was fired during the 2004-05 season, and Garnett was traded to the Boston Celtics in the 2007 offseason after three consecutive playoff misses.

Garnett won an MVP in 2003-04, when he led Minnesota to the Western Conference finals. He averaged 20.5 points, 11.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists a game in 12 seasons with the T'wolves, then won a championship with the Celtics in 2008. But in two years with the Nets, he has shown his age. This season, which could be his last, Garnett is averaging 6.8 points and 6.8 rebounds a game.

Young, 26, is averaging 14.3 points and 5.1 rebounds a game. The Nets are 21-31 and in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, but adding an impact power forward could help them push into the playoffs. He can be a free agent after this season, though, and the 11-42 Timberwolves are planning for the future.

Garnett may be, too. Yahoo Sports reported in November he has interest in owning a stake of the team in the future, and he will go out with fanfare as the greatest and most popular Timberwolves player while also helping develop young star Andrew Wiggins.
