Former boxing champion, Hector "Macho" Camacho, is currently clinging to life after being shot in the face in his native Puerto Rico this week.
Reports say the 50-year-old boxer was sitting in a car in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Tuesday evening (November 20), when one gunman opened fire on Camacho and another man from a passing vehicle. A bullet struck him in the jaw, exited his head, and lodged in his right shoulder, fracturing two vertebrae. Another man sitting in the driver's seat, Adrian Alberto Mojica Moreno of Toa Baja, died in the attack. He was just 49.
Camacho went into cardiac arrest around 4:15 a.m. Wednesday morning (November 21), but doctors at the trauma center in San Juan were able to revive him.
"He went into cardiac arrest. The doctors were able to get his heart started again with the medicine, and we are maintaining his blood pressure and pulse stable medically right now to see whether during this morning, afternoon or evening we see a positive change," Centro Medico director Dr. Ernesto Torres told reporters during a 7 a.m. media briefing this morning. "The situation with 'Macho' is very delicate. The prognosis is not good."
Torres said Camacho's mother, Maria Matias, spent about 20 minutes with her son, and was expected to return for a second visit on Wednesday night.
She will ultimately decide whether Camacho should be taken off life support, based on the results of further tests, also due Wednesday. Torres said encephalographic tests would determine whether Camacho is brain dead.
"His mother came and she is devastated," he said. "She knows the prognosis is not at all favorable."
Camacho has been considered one of the more controversial figures in boxing, but was popular among bother fans and those who worked in the sport.
His last title bout came against then-welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya in 1997, a loss by unanimous decision. He last fought in May 2010, losing to Saul Duran. He was looking for a possible comeback in 2013.
Other high-profile bouts in his career included fights against Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard. Camacho knocked out Leonard in 1997, ending what was that former champ's final comeback attempt.
